Disclosure & Accommodations in the Workplace: Employer Panel March 17th, 2:00-4:00 pm
During this panel, you will hear from employers who will share their experiences with accessible recruitment and hiring processes. This session will help you:

  • Understand how accommodations are determined in the workplace
  • Prepare to have conversations about disclosure with employers
  • Understand how the disclosure and accommodation process may differ from the experience as a post-secondary student
Employer Panelist Bios
Cheryl Wells, Nielsen
Cheryl Wells has been with Nielsen for over 20 years. Starting with Nielsen directly out of University, in an entry level analytic role, she quickly realized Nielsen was a special place to work. Cheryl developed her career through a variety of analytic, sales and people management positions. In 2018, her career pivoted into Human Resources where she took on the HR Business Partner role. This role allowed Cheryl the opportunity to have a broader impact on the organization. She's now responsible for aligning HR plans to business strategy, helping to enable the business for success. She's very proud of the work that her team has done with their Employment Equity initiatives, driving a diverse and inclusive work environment at Nielsen. Diversity and inclusion is a part of Nielsen's DNA. Cheryl serves a leadership role with Nielsen's Inclusion Impact Team at Nielsen which oversees the Employee Resource Group plans.

Ronald Peters, City of Toronto
Ronald has been an Inclusive Recruitment professional for the last 5 years working initially in the financial services sector before recently joining the City of Toronto in September 2020 as an HR Consultant for Diversity and Next Gen. Programs. Ronald works to attract diverse talent, including Persons with Disabilities, to apply for roles at the City. In addition to coordinating events and workshops he makes direct referrals to recruiters and managers across various business groups. Ronald also provides guidance around disclosure and accommodation for candidates.

Matt Manuel, Microsoft
Matt has over two decades of experience in the software development and technology fields. He started his career as a software engineer in the computer games industry and then transitioned to roles focused on people and program management. After working at game companies Electronic Arts, Zynga, LucasArts, Capcom, and Disney Interactive, along with smaller ones you've never heard of, he joined Microsoft in 2017 as Principal Program Manager. Now he leads a group of Technical Program Managers in the Applications and Infrastructure Solution area in the Commercial Software Engineering organization. We work with large enterprise customers to collaborate on their toughest challenges and transform their businesses using cloud-based solutions like Microsoft Azure and open-source projects. Matt also leads the Disability Employee Resource group for Microsoft Canada, helping to support our employees, plus their family and friends. He lives near Vancouver, BC, with his wife, daughter and two cats.

Julie Martensson, Specialsterne
Julia Martensson is the Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition with an Honours Bachelor of Human Resources Management from Uppsala University. She currently works with Specialisterne Canada, a social enterprise that helps organizations transform, innovate, and improve their recruitment and onboarding processes in line with strategic hiring, equity and diversity goals. Julia works closely with some of Canada's leading companies to help integrate more neurodiversity into their workforce, all while reaping the benefits process improvement can bring to an organization broadly.

This event is co-hosted by Accessibility Services and Career Exploration & Education and is catered to students who self-identify as living with a disability. Students from U of T, UTSC, and UTM who self-identify as having a disability(ies) are welcomed! 
 
How the Events Works
Format:  Moderators from Career Exploration & Education will facilitate a conversation between employers and students. There will be time for students to ask questions. 
Participation: Being on camera, using your mic, or participating in the chat are all optional. We welcome you to participate in a way that works for you. You are welcome to ask your own questions or simply observe these sessions to learn from ongoing discussions.

Materials: You will get the most of this session by bringing a resume or cover letter. We encourage you to come prepared with questions. Recordings of these sessions will not be provided to encourage the participation of all student attendees.  Click here to access a copy of the Student Guide for this panel event (same guide is also being used for the other panel event earlier in the month).
