Speaking to Power with Clarity and Effectiveness

Accessibility Services has partnered up with Ronna Bloom (U of T's poet in community) for our event, Speaking to Power with Clarity and Effectiveness.

Making a request for accommodations or consideration from your professors, teaching assistants or supervisors can be an intimidating process. You may struggle to: know what to say; maintain a sense of your competence as a student and assess if their response is reasonable or not. This workshop will use poetry and writing to explore the areas in which you feel hesitant in asking for what you need. The workshop will also give you practical tools to support you standing in the power of your request. No experience necessary. Please have a pen and paper, a notebook, or whatever you like to write with on hand.

By the end of the event, you will be able to:

  • Learn about your rights as a student with disability and resources you may access to support you
  • Choose how, when, and why you want to disclose your accommodation needs with others, and learn to do so with confidence
  • Develop and practice strategies to articulate their accommodation needs in different situations
Facilitators of this event are Ronna Bloom and Sarah Kloke. You can find out more information about Ronna Bloom and her work at https://ronnabloom.com/
