Sweats to Suits: Job Search Conference for New Grads - How to Identify and Communicate Your Skills to Employers

If you are job searching, especially if you are graduating in June or November 2021 or a recent graduate, this online conference is for you.  
Sweats to Suits takes place from May 4th to May 7th. You can register for and attend the sessions of your choice. All sessions will be live.  If you have internet access challenges, please contact our front desk at 905-828-5451 for alternative services. 
 
During this four-day online conference, you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Get tips directly from employers on job search strategies. 
  • Hear from UTM Alumni on how they were able to find work during the pandemic. 
  • Get practical tips on networking both during the pandemic and in-person. 
  • Develop your own job search plan, prepare your LinkedIn profile, practice interview questions, learn how to stand out in the workplace and more!

Tuesday, May 4, 2021 
10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.      Keynote Address:  Five Key Takeaways for your Career with Jason John,
                                            Assistant Director, Employer Relations & Marketing at UTM's Career Centre

Although Jason may argue that Star Wars - A New Hope (1977) was the greatest movie ever made (especially considering this talk is happening on May 4th), he will be using the strengths of a movie that released a year earlier to help students understand that the road ahead can be summarised through 5 key takeaways inspired by the lead actors' lessons learned.
 
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.      Developing Your Job Search Plan
 
 
Job search can be overwhelming. In this session, we will discuss creating a realistic and actionable job search plan based on your employment  target during both in-person job search and during the pandemic. This session covers material from Now That I'm Graduating What's  Next, a workshop for new graduates. 
 
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.       How to Identify and Communicate Your Strengths to Employers 
What are the things about your education and experiences that will be important to communicate on your resume, cover letter, during interviews and at networking Events? This workshop will help you  discover how to communicate your strengths. 
 
Wednesday, May 5, 2021 
 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.        Post-Graduation Work Permits & Your NOC Job Search 
In this session, international students will gain a brief overview on  applying for your post-graduation work permits (PGWP) as well as how  to identify NOC B, A and 0 jobs for your permanent residency  requirements. 
 
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.      Employer's Perspective on Resumes 
Hear from a respected Senior Recruitment Consultant at RBC Insurance will conduct a live resume critique and provide her insights on what she looks for when reviewing documents. There will also be the opportunity for you to ask questions. 
 
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.        Updating Your Resume Based on the Employer Perspective 
How do you take the information learned from the live critique and  apply it to your own resume? Bring your resume to this session. 
 
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.          Lunch/Prayer Break 
 
2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.          Live Mock Interview and Practice with a Peer 
In this session, a recruiter from the University of Toronto HR team will conduct a live mock interview demonstrating different ways of responding to interview questions. You will then have the opportunity to practice with a peer and get feedback.
 
Thursday, May 6, 2021 
10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.       Networking: What do You Say 
In this session, you will learn how to prepare for a networking conversation and then practice with a peer. 
 
12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m.       Recruiter Panel: Effective Virtual and in-person Networking 
A panel of employers will discuss the importance of networking for professional success and provide advice on effective online and in-person networking.

  • Ask for guidance, set expectations 
  • Be assertive by stating your opinion and respecting other's opinions, 
  • Listen, reflect and speak up in a professional way 
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.       Mental Health & Resilience  
Taking care of yourself is an important part of your job search. Attend this session to get practical tips to stay positive during your job search. 
 
12:00 Noon - 1:00 p.m.       Alumni Career Stories 
Hear from recent UTM Alumni on how they navigated their job search as new graduates and how they transitioned into the workplace.
