Reflective Learning Conversations

Social cognitive neuroscience and psychology show the importance of authentic, safe, connection spaces for optimal learning and well-being. This recurring, monthly event offers a simple relational space for grad students to talk about how your grad academic work is going and get support from other grad students (peers who face similar challenges and successes), facilitated by an Academic Success learning strategist.

Learning Circles can help you build and practice meta-cognitive awareness of your academic work, progress, and challenges, which in turn can help reduce stress, heighten clarity, and build a meaningful sense of community essential that's so important to a fulfilling graduate degree experience.

The format of Grad Learning Circles has some similarities to Talking Circles, Circling™, Authentic Relating, and "deep (empathetic) listening" spaces --- not primarily about advice-giving or problem-solving, but instead:
  • to share openly and vulnerably about your academic experiences: anything you might feel confused, lost, stuck, or overwhelmed about, what achievements you might not be recognizing or celebrating, how your learning, studying and/or research is going
  • to encourage reflection and insights about your grad work and what it means
  • to be nourished by a felt sense of shared experience and support
Note: This is not a group therapy experience; nor is it intended to replace professional mental health support where needed.
