Transformative Insight

Practices that produce Tranquility (Samatha) and Insight (Vipassana) are central to the Buddhist contemplative traditions. While it is sometimes discussed as such, it is important to acknowledge that "insight" in this context is not a specific technique, but rather the acquisition of transformative knowledge about ourselves and the world that can occur from these contemplative trainings. In this session, we will discuss the nature of these insights, from both a traditional and scientific perspective, making clear why insights into certain topics may be so beneficial, and begin to learn how to develop the skills and abilities that help these insights to mature.

Your facilitator Dr. Mark Miller is a philosopher, cognitive scientist and meditation teacher. As the Senior Research Fellow at Monash University's Center for Consciousness and Contemplative Studies, Mark investigates the meeting points between cognitive science and contemplative practices. Mark also teaches meditation in classrooms and retreats around the world, and is the host of The Contemplative Science Podcast (https://thecontemplativescientists.com/). He is known for his eclectic teaching style that weaves cutting-edge scientific research with ancient wisdom teachings, always with the aim of helping students develop mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.
