Caring for the Earth: Social Justice Music Workshop

Mar 29, 2021 07:00 PM to 08:00 PM

Registration Deadline: Mar 29, 2021 07:00 PM

Facilitator David Hallman will lead a discussion on caring for the earth with a particular focus on inter-faith approaches to climate change. From 1988 until his retirement in 2007, David was the Climate Change Co-ordinator for the World Council of Churches based in Geneva where he organized inter-faith initiatives at many of the UN negotiating sessions on climate change. The workshop will explore the strengths and challenges of the engagement of faith communities working to address climate change in policy advocacy, community organizing, and personal behaviour.

Participants will learn and sing Jim Manley's song "Take, take off your shoes".

Presented by Social Justice Music Workshop, a drop-in program is facilitated by Isabel Bernus, Musical Director of the Spirit Singers. On a weekly basis, Mondays 7pm - 8pm, the group explores a variety of songs from various traditions of world music from different ethnic communities and faiths including guest performances exploring such topics as advocating for Anti-Black racism and addressing climate change through the power of musical performance. The term will culminate in a recorded performance of a social justice song. Attend all workshops or register for your topic of interest. New singers welcome!

The group meets weekly on Mondays 7 - 8 pm. Remaining dates for the Winter term are:
