An International Conversation with Justice Maxwell (Superior Court of Justice)

Join the Centre for International Experience in conversation with the Honourable Rita-Jean Maxwell (JD 2001), Judge of the Superior Court of Justice. Justice Maxwell will share experiences related to her global career in law, as well as her work pathway within Canada during this session, and reflect on her international education, accomplished law career, and the significance of community building.
Bio:
Justice Rita J. Maxwell - A.B. (Harvard College), JD (University of Toronto Faculty of Law), LLM (Georgetown Law School). Justice Maxwell started her career in civil litigation before specializing in criminal litigation. She acted as an Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto for many years prosecuting serious crimes of violence and crimes involving vulnerable persons. From 2015-2017, she acted as Legal Counsel to the Court of Appeal for Ontario. She also worked as a Visiting Professional at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. Justice Maxwell was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 2017 and the Superior Court of Justice in 2021.
In addition to teaching legal ethics, Justice Maxwell teaches criminal law, evidence law, and trial advocacy at various law schools.
As part of U of T's Black History Month programming in February, we are highlighting the story of a Black alum who can reflect on their lived and professional experiences, through a global lens.
