A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number that you need in order to work in Canada or to have access to government programs and benefits. If you are an international student and you are planning on working in Canada or filing income taxes, then you will need a SIN. The Centre for International Experience is partnering up with Service Canada to host a series of SIN Clinics at the St George Campus, allowing students to register to get their SIN issued on the spot. These clinics will be running in August and in September for three days at a time, for a total of six sessions. The clinics will be running from 9 am to 4 pm each day, and students will be registered in advance for a time-slot.
Be mindful that registration for each Clinic will close three business days prior to the Clinic, so make sure to register early!
After registering, you will need to bring the following documents with them to the Clinic:
- An original valid primary identity document that proves your identity and your legal status in Canada, such as: A Permanent Resident Card or a Confirmation of Permanent Residence, issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC); or A work permit; or A study permit, which indicates the permit holder "may accept employment" or "may work in Canada, issued by IRCC; or A visitor record showing that you are authorized to work in Canada, issued by IRCC; A diplomatic identity card and a work authorization, issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.
- An original valid secondary document to confirm your identity, such as a passport (foreign or Canadian) or a provincial or territorial identification issued by a Canadian Government (federal, provincial or territorial)
- Completed Social Insurance Number Application which will be shared with students after registering
