Orange Shirt Day - A Critical Reading Event

Join us in-person for a collaborative event between Academic Success and First Nations House, where we will explore a critical reading process aimed at improving critical reading skills and reading comprehension. Engage with a supportive learning community and gain insight into the importance of Orange Shirt Day by participating in a sharing circle guided by two Indigenous staff members, Carol Ducharme and Elizabeth Jeffrey

September 30th marks the nationwide recognition of Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day, acknowledging the history and intergenerational harm caused to Indigenous peoples and communities by the Residential School System in Canada.

A light lunch will be provided. We will also be providing Orange Shirts, courtesy of the Office of Indigenous Initiatives. This event will include smudging, involving the burning of sacred herbs.

In this session, you will:

  1. Consider the experiences and impacts on Indigenous peoples from the Indian Residential School System through a critical reading and reflection activity
  2. Recognize the significance of Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day by engaging and learning with others
  3. Build knowledge and appreciate Indigenous peoples' stories, beliefs, and point of view by pledging an action for reconciliation
If you are a student at UTM or UTSC and would like to attend this in-person event on the St. George campus, please email Rahul Bhat (rahul.bhat@utoronto.ca) to be manually registered.
