Interfaith Meals; Community Iftar Dinner

Multi-Faith Centre - Main Activity Hall, 569 Spadina Ave

Registration Deadline: Mar 27, 2024 06:00 PM

As part of the Interfaith Meals program, the Multi-Faith Centre and Centre for International Experience will be hosting a community iftar in honour of Ramadan on March Wednesday 27th.

Iftar (pronounced: if-tahr), is the meal after sunset that occurs each evening during the month of Ramadan, when Muslims break their fast. It is often a communal experience, and many Muslim families, neighbours, and communities come together after Maghrib (pronounced: mug-rib) prayer to share foods and commemorate this important time of the Islamic calendar. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset as part of one of the five pillars of Islam, and it is a time of seeking forgiveness and strengthening faith.

Common foods eaten during iftar are culturally specific, but most Muslims break their fast with dates, and often eat foods such as rice dishes, samosas with vegetable or meat fillings, kebabs, and pakora (a small, deep-fried fritter made of vegetable or meat filling and chickpea flour). A common greeting you can say to Muslims is "Ramadan Mubarak'' (pronounced: rah-mah-thon moo-bah-ruhk), which means "Happy Ramadan."

All are welcome!
