Get Experience UTSC: Hacking the 'I Can't get a Job without Experience' Cycle

Sep 14, 2021 03:00 PM to 04:30 PM

Registration Deadline: Sep 14, 2021 02:45 PM

What are the benefits of volunteering? Get Experience UTSC will provide you with the chance to learn about opportunities to give back to the community and develop new skills and build on existing knowledge.

In this presentation, Hacking the "Can't get a Job without Experience" Cycle, we will explore why we volunteer and work part-time, discover how to network for information, how to meet people and develop new skills along the way. A "podcast" style interview will follow the presentation where we will have a chance to speak with an HR Professional and a Grad School admissions officer to comment on how they look at the stereotypical career development timeline, how they look at volunteer vs paid experiences, etc.

Short presentation, will cover:

  • Why we volunteer - networking for information, meet people/make friends, develop skills
  • Stereotypical career development timeline (will vary!) that employers/grad schools may expect to see from you:
    • Ontario high school: 40 hrs of volunteer work (Int'l students: volunteer work or clubs or band -> catch up at uni!)
    • high school and/or university 1st/2nd year: part-time jobs and summer jobs AND/OR volunteering
    • throughout university: co-op AND/OR part-time jobs AND/OR summer jobs AND/OR volunteering at something relevant if the jobs are not relevant to your future plans
    • throughout uni: sports, clubs, leadership programming/student life stuff, personal hobbies
